St Andrews Church, 43 Blyth St, Cromwell – $20 all seats.

Dogs of all shapes and sizes visit Ruth Shaw’s three wee bookshops in Manapōuri in the far south of Aotearoa New Zealand. Local dogs, holiday house dogs, travelling dogs: many have great stories, be they funny, sad, strange, bemusing, quirky or sweet.

Woven throughout are tales of the very special Hunza, the dog who worked with troubled teens alongside Ruth when she was a youth worker.

This is a window into the wonderful world of Ruth and her generous love of people, books and dogs. It’s a must-read for dog fans, book fans and anyone who loved her first book, The Bookseller at the End of the World.

Bookseller and author Ruth Shaw has a huge capacity to care, extend compassion and bring understanding – it is of no surprise that this exceptional gift extends beyond humans to animals – and in this case of her new book – dogs. In each of her bookstores Ruth has a dog-friendly policy and adds to the spirit of her store environment.

Bookshop Dogs came out in October 2023, and instantly became a NZ bestseller.

Ruth Shaw runs a cluster of wee bookshops in remote Manapōuri in the far south of New Zealand. She lives with her husband, Lance.

In 2022 she published her first memoir, The Bookseller at the End of the World, which has since become a critically acclaimed national treasure. Arts Central hosted a very successful evening with Ruth in June 2022.
